Philadelphia Salon Takes Over Rittenhouse Square Here Not There JULY 2nd-5th till 10pm 18th and Locust Street Philadelphia’s new kids on the art block will be taking over Rittenhouse Square Fourth of July weekend, beginning with an opening of HERE NOT THERE on First Friday on July 2nd at 6 pm at 225 S 18th, on the corner of Locust St and 18th St, -entrance on Locust street. The Independence Day revelry starts on the Square with this new art opening highlighting three Philadelphia Salon artists; Jordan Griska, Pete Zebley and Caryn Kunkle. The works are joined by their strong representation of clearly contemporary American art; conjoining and answering some of the latest concepts and currents that have been showing up in galleries across the country. Here Not There will be curated by Kunkle. The hotly controversial topic of artists curating their own shows is permeating the art world right now and Fourth of July weekend is the best time to turn up the heat! Open to the public from 6-10pm Friday, July 2 and throughout the weekend, Saturday and Sunday and Monday from 10 am-10pm. The collective is the brainchild of artist and innovator, Caryn Kunkle. Paying homage to the great thinkers of the past, Kunkle reinvented the idea of a Salon, or a place where intellectuals could gather and host a dialogue to understand and advance a particular subject. In Kunkle’s world, the subject is art. In 2008, Kunkle began hosting the Philadelphia Salon’s monthly meetings in one of Philadelphia’s finest pieces of lost architecture, one of the old Baron Mansions on North Broad Street. The meetings allow Philadelphia Salon artists to articulate their thoughts on the unraveling art world and understand the movement in which it is flowing. Philadelphia Salon participants present their newest works to the forum and host a lively conversation centered on their piece. Kunkle also curates art shows to display the works of Salon participants. Kunkle’s Salon creates a community of art and births a consciousness of aesthetic.
